Last Son to screen at Akron Film Fest

A special screening of the Superman documentary "Last Son" by Cleveland filmmaker Brad Ricca (also a member of the Siegel & Shuster Society)will be shown at 10pm this Friday, April 3rd during the Akron, Ohio Film Festival.

"Last Son" is a Depression-era, coming-of-age story that explains Superman's historical, social and cultural significance by tracing his beginnings and the society in which he was created.

"Think about it: Why does the hero wear a skin-tight costume with underwear on the outside?" Ricca poses. "With boots? And a spit curl? And an 'S' on the chest?"

Ricca said his documentary answers those questions and the deeper one: Why was Superman created at all? Did that creation come from a single flash of inspiration as generally reported or was the creation more subtle?

Cincinnati Playhouse to Premier Jerry Siegel Play next year!

By David Bar Katz
April 3 – May 2, 2010

Superman - the man of steeI – is invulnerable. Jerry Siegel - the creator of Superman – was far more vulnerable. Siegel was one of a number of Jews who created the cartoon superheroes of the 1930s and 40s in response to the rise of Nazi Germany. Siegel’s own tumultuous story intertwines with the tragic events of a world on the edge, a place where even Superman has his limits. A remarkable new play about fantasy and the reality of the 20th century.

Maltz Museum Exhibit Extended in Cleveland
The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage has extended the special exhibition, "Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comics 1938-1950," for three weeks, through January 25.

"There was a change in the next venue (the Skirball Museum in Los Angeles), giving us the opportunity to keep this marvelous exhibition a little longer, and we jumped at the chance," said museum Executive Director Judi Feniger. "We always get calls just after a show closes asking, 'Am I too late?' A few extra weeks will give visitors an little more time after the holidays, and school groups a few more weeks after the winter break."

The creators of the original superheroes, including Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel and many others, were predominantly Jewish, as were the comic book publishers of that era.

Their characters became beloved symbols of human potential and the triumph of good over evil. While most creators were from New York, the boys who dreamed up Superman hailed from right here in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio.

Organized by The Breman Museum in Atlanta, the exhibition has drawn raves there and in Miami and Michigan, as it has from thousands who have seen it in Cleveland.

Zap! Pow! Bam includes vintage artwork, rare early comic books, scripts, multi-media, original toys and games, video conversations with some leading comic book creators, and colorful interactive displays.
